Travens, Byrd receive KCAC softball honors for the week

Two Tabor College softball players received KCAC Softball Player and pitcher of the Week were selected for their performances on the field from March 5-11 by a vote of conference sports information directors.

Kerrigan Travens earned KCAC Softball Player of the Week honors and Madison Byrd earned the KCAC Pitcher of the Week honors.

Travens banged out five hits in six at-bats in a doubleheader against Peru State March 8. The Bluejay catcher drove in three of Tabor’s seven runs on the day. Travens belted a run-scoring double in Game 1 that would prove to be the game winner and drove in the tying run in Game 2. Byrd was nearly unhittable against Peru State in that March 8 game in Hillsboro.

The sophomore fanned 12 Bobcats in a complete game one-hit shutout. Byrd walked a batter with two outs in the first, then retired the next 15 hitters.

A two-out infield single was the only hit allowed by the Bluejay ace, who struck out the next batter to end the inning. Byrd is now 3-3 with a 1.29 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched on the season.

Following the sweep of Peru State, the Bluejays are 5-12 for the season. Tabor will host Doane University at the Hillsboro Sports Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
