TC’s Emoto wins ITA Regional

For the second consecutive year, Jessica Emoto will represent the Tabor College tennis team at the ITA National Championships.

Emoto was the No. 1 seed the 2016 ITA Regional Championships Sept. 16-18 and won the tournament with a 5-0 record.

Following a first-round bye, Emoto defeated Doane’s Ashley Zaeske, 6-0, 6-0. Emoto’s next three opponents were from William Woods, and she defeated all of them: Julie Mulder 6-4, 6-1; Felicia Cesar, 6-2, 6-3; and fourth-seeded Alba Salinas, 7-6 (8), 6-2. That set up a meeting with seventh-seeded Brittany Zipf from McPherson in the championship. Emoto earned the victory, 6-3, 6-3 to punch a ticket to the national tournament.

Also participating in the regional were Naima Mexsen, who lost to William Woods’ Paige Smith, 7-6 (2), 6-0; and Heidi Klassen, who had a first-round bye then lost to second-seeded Zlata Shuraeva of William Woods, 6-1, 6-2.

Mexsen went 3-1 in the consolation bracket. Klassen went 1-1.

In doubles action, Mexsen and Kiana Fujioka lost to Striegel and Bouwmeester, 8-1. Emoto and Klassen defeated Shepherd/Stout, 8-2, then lost to Zipf/Bwalya, 8-5.

Celeste Worthy and Mandi Hiett had a first-round bye, then lost to William Woods’ Steward/Mulder, 8-0.

Meanwhile, in men’s singles, fifth-seeded Illia Filanchuk went 5-1.He won the top half of his bracket but fell in the finals.

After a first-round bye, Filanchuk defeated Tomas Yacuzio 7-5, 6-3; Juan Aledendro Jimenez 6-3, 6-1; Stephano Benedetti 6-3, 6-1; Hector Garcia 4-6, 6-2, 6-3; and Johnnie Carmichael 7-6 (5), 6-4. Filanchuk lost to Barreiro in the finals 6-2, 6-2.

Angel Miguel had a first-round bye, then lost to Franco Poi, 6-2, 6-1.

In men’s doubles, eighth-seeded Filanchuk and Angel Miguel went 1-1. After a first-round bye, the duo defeated Webster/Petty, 8-6; then lost to Smirnow/McCormick, 8-6.

Stephen Wilson and Anton Sopin lost to Kiland/McCartney, 8-2.

Coming—Emoto will compete at nationals Oct. 13-16.
