TC women roll to win over Swedes

Sam Short draws a foul late in the second quarter at Bethany Thursday. She made both free throws to give Tabor a 32-17 lead at halftime. The 21st-ranked Tabor College women?s basketball team rolled to a 68-46 victory over Bethany Thursday, despite making less than 35 percent of its shots from the field (20-58).

The Bluejays outrebounded the Swedes, 44-30, and held an 18-6 advantage in second-chance points. Tabor was also aided by 13 steals, including nine in the first half.

?We took care of the basketball and that was good because we didn?t shoot it particularly well,? coach Shawn Reed said. ?We had more possessions and outrebounded them, and that helped.?

Tabor burst to a 12-2 lead out of the gate, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers by Kaleigh Troxell. Bethany ended the first quarter with a string of five unanswered points to cut the Bluejays? lead to 17-12 at the first break.

Tena Loewen and Mallory Zuercher scored Tabor?s next seven points from the charity stripe to boost the Bluejays? margin back to double figures.

By halftime, Tabor had extended its lead to 32-17.

Zuercher ignited an 8-0 run with a three-pointer. By the end of it, Tabor held its largest advantage of the night, 47-23. The third quarter ended with the Bluejays in front, 47-27.

The closest Bethany got after that was within 18, and Tabor cruised to the 22-point win.

?I think we were a little rusty in the first half because we haven?t played since before Thanksgiving, and that was an extended break,? Reed said. ?I think we needed the break. I wasn?t that worried about it, but there was a little bit of rust there for sure. It?s just good to be able to go on the road and get a win.?

Zuercher led all scorers with 15 points. Troxell and Morgan Ediger each scored 11.

Coming?Tabor (4-0, 5-5)?was scheduled to host 18th-ranked Haskell Indian Nations University Monday. The Bluejays return to KCAC play when Oklahoma Wesleyan (3-2, 6-5)?comes to Hillsboro Thursday at 6 p.m. Tabor will host McPherson (2-3, 3-8) Saturday at 5 p.m.
