TC tennis competes in individual tourney

The Tabor tennis teams competed in the KCAC Individual Flights Tennis Tournaments Thursday in Salina.

?The individual tournament was delayed all morning by rain, so only the doubles was played,? coach John Ruder said. ?Our teams performed well, but were hampered by missing players.

?Only one of the men?s and one of the women?s teams remained the same as during the regular season.?

For the men, in No. 1 doubles, second-team all-KCAC selection David Simmet and Tyler Dort entered as the No. 6 seed and lost to No. 3 Ottawa, 8-3, in the quarterfinal round. Simmet and Dort then defeated No. 7 Friends, 8-1, and then No. 5 Southwestern, 8-2, to claim fifth place.

In No. 2 doubles, No. 7 seeded Nate Panttaja and Jared Friesen lost to No. 2 Bethany 8-1, No. 6 Southwestern 8-4; and No. 5 Ottawa 9-8 (8-6 tiebreak).

In No. 3 doubles, No. 4 Jake Brucks and Sam Brucks were defeated by No. 5 Kansas Wesleyan 8-7 (7-5 tiebreak); then defeated No. 8 Friends, 8-4, and No. 6 Ottawa, 8-6, for fifth place.

For the women, first-team all-KCAC selection Becky Faber and Katie Becker entered the No. 1 doubles competition as the seventh seed. The duo lost to No. 2 Kansas Wesleyan 8-2 and No. 6 Ottawa 8-6 before defeating No. 8 McPherson by default to earn seventh place.

In No. 2 doubles, fourth-seeded Anna Friesen and Karly Lindroth-Yates defeated No. 5 Southwestern 8-5. They then lost to No. 1 Bethel 8-2 before losing to No. 2 Kansas Wesleyan to claim fourth place.

Tabor did not send a No. 3 doubles team.

The individual singles flights will not be rescheduled.

?I was disappointed that we had to cancel the singles as I felt several of our players would have done well,? Ruder said.

Coming? The Tabor men (4-3, 5-9) enter the KCAC team tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 Bethany (7-0, 12-3) in a semifinal matchup Friday at 9 a.m.

The winner will play either No. 3 Bethel (5-2, 11-4) or No. 2 McPherson (6-1, 22-6) for the championship to be held Friday at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the NAIA National Championship.

All matches will be held at Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita.
