TC swim teams compete at nationals

The Tabor College swim teams competed at the NAIA championships last week in Columbus, Ga.

The women’s team scored its first points at the national meet and placed 22nd of 23 teams with four points. Olivet Nazarene won with 639.

The women scored points in two relay events.

Aleya Hill, Kelly Smith, Michal Parris and Mariana Nassuno Alves turned in a school-record performance in the 800-yard freestyle relay, finishing 16th in 8 minutes, 17.81 seconds and scoring two points for the team.

Smith, Kaitlin Whitten, Hill and Nassuno Alves finished 16th in the 200 free relay in 1:43.44, also scoring two points.

Meanwhile, Evan Bell, Brett Magee, Nicholas Bradley and John McCullough led the men’s team, breaking the school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay and placing 16th in 7:23.52. They scored both of Tabor’s two team points; the Bluejays finished 20th. Olivet Nazarene won with 4281⁄2 points.

“These teams came into the meet with very little chance to score points on paper,” coach Nate Duell said. “Thankfully, we don’t swim meets on paper because paper doesn’t show character, heart and gumption. This team has the intangibles that are required to deal with the pressure of big meet swimming, and they did not disappoint.”
