TC softball team sweeps Central Christian, snaps year-old losing streak

The Tabor College softball Team earned their first two victories of the season with a sweep of Central Christian, which visited Hillsboro for an afternoon doubleheader Feb. 21. The wins snapped a losing streak that dated back to a 9-0 win over Central on March 5, 2008.

In the first half of the double-header Tabor defeated Central Christian by the score of 6-2, behind freshman Danielle Cronauer’s four-hit complete game. Cronauer evened her record at 1-1.

?Danielle pitched a great game during the first game of the double-header,? coach John Bassett said. ?Danielle has so much movement on her pitches that it is very difficult for opponents to hit the ball squarely. She gets a lot of ground balls to the left side of the infield and we have two tremendous fielders there with Kezia Cabrera and Roxy Rodriguez.?

The Bluejays used a four-run first inning to jump on the Tigers and never looked back.

Tabor was led offensively by Cronauer and Megan Wedal, who hit two-for-three in the game with two RBI apiece. Dorene Dodson knocked two hits and scored one run.

In the second game, Tabor defeated Central Christian by the score of 9-1, behind Dodson’s strong five inning performance allowing only one run on three hits. Tied at one apiece, Tabor used a five-run fourth and a three-run fifth to pull away from the Tigers.

Tabor was led offensively by Dodson and Amanda Howe, who both had three hits in three trips to the plate.

Alyssa Voth also had a strong day at the plate, with two hits driivng in three runs for the Bluejays.

?I’m very happy with the victories,? Bassett added. ?We saw some things we need to continue to work on, but when it comes right down to it, this was a team we were supposed to beat. That being said, we approached the game with the right mentality, a great attitude, and played the game to the level that we should be playing. I’m excited for the next few weeks to see if we can carry this momentum into our tournaments and spring trip.?

Tabor was swept by York College in the season opener, dropping both halves of the Feb. 12 doubleheader in Hillsboro by scores of 9-4 and 5-2.

As rough as the treatment from York was, Tabor played competitively against a team that won 12 games and played for the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament championship a year ago.

Coming?Tabor (2-2) travels to Kansas State for a two-game set slated for 2 p.m. today (Feb. 25). The Bluejays are set to face Haskell Indian Nations March 3.
