TC softball 1-4 at Cowtown Classic

The Tabor College softball team started the season with one win and four losses over two days at the Cowtown Classic last week.

Houston-Victoria—Tabor concluded its Texas outing with a 4-3 loss to the 18th-ranked Jaguars Saturday.

The Bluejays got on the board first with a run in the opening inning, but the Jaguars tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Each team scored once in the eighth inning. Tabor plated its third run in the top of the ninth, but the Jaguars scored twice in the bottom half of the inning.

Tabor tallied 12 hits to Houston-Victoria’s four, but the Bluejays committed three errors. Sierra Bacerra was 3-for-4 at-bat. Stephanie Vejar, Josie Mora and Araselly Vargas each had one RBI.

Vejar sustained the pitching loss. Over 81⁄3 innings, she scattered four hits and two runs (none earned). She walked no one and struck out 10 batters.

Columbia—Tabor started the day Saturday with an 8-0 loss. The Bluejays recorded five hits in the game, led by Byrd, who was 2-for-3 at-bat, including a triple. Tabor stranded five runners on base and committed three errors in the game.

Stephanie Vejar sustained the pitching loss. In three innings, she gave up five hits and four runs (two earned). She walked one batter and struck out no one.

Bacone—Tabor concluded Friday with a 10-0 victory in five innings.

The Bluejays scored six runs off seven hits and two errors in the top of the second inning. Hannah Jones keyed the frame with a two-run double that ended Bacone pitcher Stormie Knowlton’s outing. Dani Calder and Araselly Vargas hit RBI singles in the half-inning.

Tabor added three runs off four hits in the fourth inning. With two outs, Josie Mora and Kelsey Jones hit back-to-back singles, then Stephanie Vejar scratched the first run across with a single. After Sierra Becerra worked a walk, Madison Byrd hit a two-run single to conclude scoring in the frame.

The Bluejays scored once more in the fifth when Brianna Quiroz worked a bases-loaded walk.

Mora was 3-for-3 at-bat. Byrd had three RBIs.

Byrd earned the pitching win. She scattered two hits over five innings of work, walking three batters and striking out six.

Oklahoma City—Tabor then suffered a 10-0 loss to the top-ranked Stars in five innings. No additional statistics were available.

Morningside—Tabor kicked off the season with an 8-0 loss to the ninth-ranked Mustangs in five innings Friday. The Bluejays did not record a hit in the contest.

Brianna Quiroz (0-1) sustained the pitching loss. In 31⁄3 innings, she gave up six hits and three earned runs. She walked no one and struck out three batters.

Coming—Tabor will host its home opener Friday with a doubleheader against Northwestern. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
