TC basketball teams top preseason polls

The Tabor College men’s and women’s basketball teams topped all four polls at the KCAC media day Oct. 4.

Women—The Bluejay women were picked first by KCAC coaches and the media, following last year’s 19-1, 28-8 campaign in which Tabor earned the KCAC regular-season and conference tournament titles.

In the preseason coaches’ poll, Tabor received 11 first-place votes for a total of 121 points. Friends (109) received the final first-place vote, followed by Oklahoma Wesleyan (96), Kansas Wesleyan (87), Ottawa (82), Sterling (60), McPherson (59), Southwestern (57), University of Saint Mary (54), York (30), Bethany (25) and Bethel (12).

The Bluejays received 13 first-place votes from the media for a total of 167 points. Friends (149) received the final first-place vote, followed by Oklahoma Wesleyan (134), Kansas Wesleyan (108), Ottawa (106), Southwestern (97), Sterling (92), McPherson (80), University of Saint Mary (59), York (49), Bethany (28) and Bethel (23).

A year ago, Tabor advanced to the round of eight in the NAIA Division II national championship tournament for the second consecutive season. The Bluejays have qualified for the national tournament the past three seasons.

The Bluejays will open the season by hosting William Woods Oct. 31 at 5:30 p.m.

Men—Tabor was selected first by KCAC coaches and the media, following last year’s perfect, 20-0, KCAC campaign. The Bluejays earned the regular-season and conference tournament titles and concluded the season with an overall record of 30-4.

The Bluejays received seven first-place votes in the coaches’ poll and tallied 117 total points to edge York (114), who received the final five first-place votes. Rounding out the poll were University of Saint Mary (100), Oklahoma Wesleyan (84), Friends (73), Bethany (66), Ottawa (65), Southwestern (46), Sterling (39), Bethel (33), Kansas Wesleyan (28) and McPherson (27).

Tabor received 11 first-place votes in the media poll and scored 176 points. York (154) received the final four first-place votes, followed by University of Saint Mary (141), Oklahoma Wesleyan (112), Southwestern (111), Friends (108), Ottawa (98), Bethany (81), Sterling (71), Bethel (51), Kansas Wesleyan (35) and McPherson (32).

A year ago, Tabor suffered a first-round loss to IU East in the NAIA Division II national championship tournament. The Bluejays have made three consecutive appearances in the national tournament.

The Bluejays will open the season by hosting William Woods Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
