Tabor volleyball 3-1 at Evangel

In its final appearance before conference play starts in full force, the Tabor volleyball team recorded three wins and one loss at the Evangel tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Bluejays opened with a convincing 3-0 win over Central Baptist. Tabor won Sets 1 and 2 by the same margin, 25-12, before dominating Set 3 with a 25-4 victory. Tabor hit .378 in the game, led by Tena Loewen with 11 kills.

Tabor then defeated College of the Ozarks, 3-0.

Tabor won Set 1, 25-13. The Bluejays followed with a 25-10 victory in Set 2. College of the Ozarks made things interesting in Set 3, but Tabor earned the 25-23 win. Loewen again led the attack with nine kills.

Saturday began with a five-set battle against William Woods.

In a highly-contested first set, the Owls earned the victory, 29-27.

Tabor responded by winning Set 2, 25-16. But the Owls came back to win Set 3, 25-22.

Tabor evened the count by winning Set 4, 25-12, and the Bluejays claimed victory by winning Set 5, 15-10. Tabor?s hitting percentage was .220, led by Amy Horner with 15 kills.

In its final matchup of the tournament, Tabor faced the 11th-ranked host school and lost, 3-1.

The Bluejays won Set 1, 25-23, but Evangel won the next three (25-15, 25-15, 25-10).

Tabor?s attacking percentage was .127 for the game, compared with .248 for Evangel. Horner led the attack with 16 kills.

Sterling?Tabor won its second KCAC matchup of the season with a 3-1 victory Wednesday.

Sterling won Set 1, 25-21, in a battle that remained within five points from start to finish. An 8-8 tie turned into an 11-8 Tabor deficit, and the Bluejays battled from behind the rest of the set.

Tabor evened the count with a 26-24 victory in Set 2. The Bluejays got off to a 4-0 start thanks to three Sterling errors and a service ace by Amy Horner. Tabor led, 10-6, but Sterling made a comeback, aided by four Bluejay errors, to take the lead, 11-10.

The teams battled back and forth from there. Trailing 20-18, Tabor used a string of four points to take the lead, thanks in part to kills by Tonisha Dean and Tena Loewen. Sterling tied it at 22 and the teams traded points. Locked at 24, Loewen recorded a kill, then followed with a service ace to give Tabor the win.

Tabor won Set 3, 25-20. After a 15-15 tie, Tabor outscored the Warriors 10-5, polishing the win with a Katelin Horstick kill.

Tabor displayed its best attacking in Set 4, winning 25-16, on .419 hitting. With Tabor leading 10-7, Horner, Loewen and Horstick combined for four consecutive kills, and the Bluejays never looked back. Horstick ended the set with a service ace.

The Bluejays hit .115 in the outing. Loewen led the attack with 16 kills. Horner added 10.

Katie Frankenbery had 24 assists. Keeley Kroeker added 16. Ashley Lopez led the defense with 14 digs.

Coming?Tabor (2-0, 9-6) will return to conference play Saturday by welcoming Friends (2-0, 3-4) to town. The matchup is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
