Tabor softball gains momentum, goes 3-1 at Sterlin??g tournament

Tabor College softball went 3-1 at the Sterling College Tourna?ment last week to bring its season record to 10-10.

?We?re seeing the ball really well,? coach Suzanne Unruh said. ?I think we had over seven home runs this weekend and we pitched well.?

The Bluejays took on Huston-Tillotson College in the first round of the tournament Friday, earning an 8-7 victory. They later defeated York College, 13-8, before falling to Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 10-2.

Saturday, the Bluejays pounded the University of St. Mary, 20-0. Tabor was scheduled to play Peru State College in the last round of the Sterling tournament, but that game was rained out.

?We?re really starting to come together and jelling as a team,? Unruh said. ?We are really coming together well, so I?m excited for the rest of the season.?

Hillsdale?Tabor swept a doubleheader at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College March 15, 16-1 and 25-2.

?They had some pitching issues,? coach Suzanne Unruh said. ?It was good for us that we made the adjustments we needed to at the plate. We played great offense and defense.?

Tabor started Game 1 with five runs in the first inning and one in the second before exploding for nine runs in the third.

Hillsdale managed one run in the bottom of the fourth, but another Tabor run at top of the fifth ended the game.

Samantha Behm led Tabor with five runs batted in and scored one run. Madie Simpson had four RBIs and two runs, and Amanda Howe posted three RBIs and one run.

Rae?Shon Johnson and Alysha Carter each scored three runs and Andrea Bray, Taylor Funk and Margaret Cornish each scored two.

Cornish also had one RBI. Ashly Hernandez scored once.

Hernandez pitched five innings for the Bluejays, allowing one hit and one run, while striking out seven.

In Game 2, the Bluejays put up three runs in the first inning, three in the second inning and 11 in the third.

Hillsdale scored a run each in the second and third innings, but five more runs by Tabor in the top of the fifth ended the game.

Hernandez drove in seven runs and scored five. Kyleen Condon had five RBIs, including a homer, and scored two runs.

Funk had four RBIs and scored two runs, Howe posted two RBIs and five runs, and Behm had two RBIs and two runs.

Simpson, Bray and Courtney Meister each had one RBI and one run and Melisa Cruz had one RBI and two runs. Cornish posted four runs.

Kyleen Condon pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out four.

Coming?The Bluejays are scheduled to play Friday at Oklahoma Wesleyan University before returning home to play Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College Saturday.

They are scheduled to play at Butler County Community College Monday, March 28, before returning home to begin conference play against Sterling College Wednesday, March 30.
