Tabor softball earns first KCAC wins

Araselly Vargas throws to first base for the third out, closing the top of the third inning of Game 1 against Bethel Saturday. Tabor won, 6-2, and completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory in Game 2. The Tabor College softball team picked up its first conference wins of the season with a sweep of Bethel Saturday.

Tabor won Game 1, 6-2. The Bluejays scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Bethel answered with two in the top of the third.

From there, it was all Tabor. The Bluejays added a run in the bottom of the third and three runs more in the fifth.

Sarah Massey hit a home run and was 1-for-2 at the plate.

Marilee Burge was the winning pitcher. Over seven innings, she gave up four hits and two runs (both earned) while walking no one and striking out eight.

Tabor completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory in Game 2. The Bluejays tallied two runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third and one in the sixth for the shutout win in six innings.

Lauren Massey was the winning pitcher. She gave up four hits over six innings, walking five batters and striking out three.

Kansas Wesleyan?Tabor lost two games to the Coyotes last Tuesday.

The Bluejays lost Game 1, 5-4, when Kansas Wesleyan hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Coyotes scored a run in the first and third innings before Tabor got on the board with a two-run fifth inning. A third Coyote run in the bottom half of the inning gave Kansas Wesleyan a 3-2 lead.

Each team added a run in the sixth inning, and Tabor evened the score with a run in the seventh, but the walk-off home run sealed the Coyote victory.

Sara Vela was 2-for-2, including a home run, with two RBIs; Araselly Vargas hit a home run and had two RBIs.

Marilee Burge was the losing pitcher. Over 62?3 innings, she gave up 10 hits and five runs (four earned).

Tabor lost Game 2, 8-4. The Bluejays scored a run in the first inning, but the Coyotes took the lead for good with four runs over the second and third innings.

Tabor outscored Kansas Wesleyan 2-1 in the fourth inning to draw within 5-3, but the Coyotes scored three more in the fifth to secure a five-run lead.

Vargas was 2-for-3 with one RBI; Vela was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Coming?Tabor (2-2, 11-14) will play a doubleheader at 24th-ranked Friends (2-3, 24-10)?today at 5 p.m. The Blue?jays travel to South?western (3-1, 7-10) Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
