Tabor soccer teams sweep Bethel Threshers

The Tabor College soccer teams Swept Bethel College Oct. 18.

MEN— Tabor College proved that the product doesn’t have to be pretty to earn a victory, as the Blue­jays outlasted Bethel College 2-1 in double overtime Wednesday, Oct. 18, at North Newton.

The Threshers got on the board first with a goal in the 29th minute, forcing Tabor to play from behind against a more aggressive Bethel offense.

Bethel outshot Tabor 21-9, but the Bluejays proved more accurate as the Threshers had just an 8-4 margin in shots on goal. Derrick Eszlinger had seven saves for the Bluejays, shutting down the Threshers for nearly 80 minutes after the first goal.

Finally in the 78th minute, Tabor tied the score as Rex Glenn scored off a pass from Oscar Moyano. The score remained 1-1 as time expired in regulation.

In the first overtime, Bethel had the better chances as Tabor was forced into a defensive mode. But the Threshers could not convert on any of its four shots in the extra period, and the Bluejays took advantage in the second overtime.

With less than a minute to play, Oscar Moyano provided the “golden goal,” giving the Bluejays a win in the 109th minute. It was Tabor’s third KCAC win to offset its four losses..

The Bluejays traveled to Ottawa on Oct. 21, and came home with neither a win or loss, not even a goal in a 0-0 tie with the Braves.

WOMEN—Tabor earned a second KCAC win in North Newton on Wednesday, Oct. 18, with a 2-0 blanking of Bethel College.

Dakota Spencer provided the offense for the Bluejays, scoring bookend goals in the fifth and 83rd minutes. Spencer has now scored 12 goals in 13 games this season.

Ruby-Anne Fines recorded three saves in her fifth shutout of the season.

Coming—Tabor was schedule to host the Okla­homa Wesleyan teams Oct. 28. The women will take on the No. 13-ranked Eagles in Joel Wiens Stadium starting at 5 p.m.

The men will face OWU’s No. 2 ranked men (8-0 in KCAC play, 13-1 overall) at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Southwes­tern College will come to town. The Moundbuilder women (2-3-2, 5-7-2) will play Tabor at 1 p.m. in Joel Wiens Stadium. The Southwestern men (1-5, 1-13) will take on Tabor at 3:30 p.m.
