Tabor soccer opens against Avila

The Tabor soccer teams opened the 2017 season by splitting games Aug. 30 against Avila, a future KCAC member.

Women—Tabor posted a 3-0 win with Dakota Spencer scoring all three goals. She scored in the ninth minute of play and again in the 41st minute to give Tabor a 2-0 halftime lead. Spencer scored her third goal with 52:04 left to play.

Avila outshot Tabor, 15-9. Both teams recorded six shots on goal. Goalkeeper Ruby-Anne Fines had five saves.

Men—Tabor suffered a 3-2 defeat to Avila despite holding a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Miguel Castillo scored off an Anthony Sanders assist in the 18th minute of action to give Tabor the early lead. In the 42nd minute, Andrew Villereal scored off an assist by Oscar Moyano.

Avila, however, got on the board with a goal in the 44th minute, then scored a pair of second-half goals less than two minutes apart to claim the lead for good.

Avila outshot Tabor, 13-4, including 6-3 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Austin Fahrney registered three saves.

Coming—The Tabor women’s and men’s teams will play host tonight to the Univer­sity of Science and Arts of Okla­homa. The women will play at 5 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday, the men will take on Newman University in Wichita with a 7 p.m. start. On Saturday, the Blue­jays will travel to Manhattan to play Man­hattan Christian College. The women will play at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.
