Tabor cross-country sluggish at Mac meet

The Tabor cross country team had a slow day Saturday despite the beautiful fall weather, with the men finishing sixth out of 11 teams and the women coming in seventh at the McPherson College Lakeside Shootout.

?We were a bit off today as a whole,? coach Dan Swaney said. ?The efforts were good but the times just weren?t there for the most part. I think some of it was because the grass in the park was a little long and that can start to make a significant difference with longer distances.?

Joel Allen set the pace for the men?s team, finishing seventh in 26:40.

?Joel was among the leaders throughout the race and moved up slowly during the fifth mile despite a side ache,? Swaney said. ?He ran a strong race, outkicked two guys and had the fastest last mile of anyone on our team.?

Behind Allen were Garrett Daugherty (31st, 28:17), Jacob Heil (32nd, 28:19), Dylan Craw?ford (44th, 29:28), Christian Lopez (55th, 29:28), Nathan Vogel (64th, 30:15), Phillip Magos (65th, 30:17), Alex Wuest (74th, 31:55), Trent Wilker (87th, 33:27) and Jon Guiterrez (99th, 36:36).

Swaney said Wilker and Gutierrez set personal records, but everyone else ran quite a bit slower than the previous meet.

For the women, Brielle Lund placed third in 26:40.

?Brielle Lund ran a great race,? Swaney said. ?She moved up steadily the whole time.?

Despite her finish, Lund?s time was 26 seconds slower than the previous meet at Emporia.

Finishing behind her were Hannah Holmes (28th, 21:09), Kat Plaza (50th, 22:32), Kaitlyn Lowry (54th, 7:21), Alli Palmgren (57th, 23:09) and Jordan Scheer (79th, 26:10).

?We ran a good race, about as well as I think I could have hoped for,? Swaney said.

?With the exception of Kat, all of our women ran times that were a bit slower than I had hoped we would get, but considering the condition of the course, I think they all ran pretty well.?

Coming? The Bluejays are scheduled to compete at the NAIA Mid-States Classic in Winfield Oct. 22. The women?s race starts at 10:15 a.m. and the men?s begins at 11 a.m.
