Tabor baseball starts season 4-0

The Tabor College baseball team kicked off its season Saturday and Sunday with four wins, including a doubleheader sweep of St. Edwards University, ranked third in the NAIA Division II polls.

Dallas Christian?Tabor swept Dallas Christian in two games Sunday.

The Bluejays won, 7-1, in Game 1. After three scoreless innings, Tabor got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Keenan Chanin singled to score Kevin Seeger. Tabor added a run in the fifth inning when Shaun Reid reached base on a wild throw and later scored on a wild pitch.

Each team managed one run in the sixth inning. For Tabor, Colton Flax doubled to open the inning. Pinch-runner Dakota Vaughn later scored when Chanin hit a sacrifice fly.

Tabor ended the game with a four-run seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Reid scored on a wild pitch, and Flax singled to score Silva and Joy Guevara. Blake Standiford later singled to bring Flax home.

Flax was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Chanin went 1-for-1 with two RBIs.

Russell Longworth (1-0) was winning pitcher. Over six innings, he gave up six hits and one run (earned) while walking no one and striking out six.

Tabor followed with a 9-2 victory in Game 2. Tabor built a 5-0 lead after five innings before Dallas Christian scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Much like in Game 1, Tabor enjoyed a four-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Case Jenkins knocked out a double that scored Rocha, and Torres followed with a double to bring Vaughn and Jenkins home. Torres later scored when CJ DeDeaux hit a sacrifice fly. Dallas Christian added a final run in the bottom of the seventh.

Rocha was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Torres was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Junior Mustain (1-0) won on the mound. In five innings, he allowed three hits and no runs while walking no one and striking out 10.

St. Edwards University?The Bluejays won both games Saturday.

Tabor won, 4-2, in Game 1. The Bluejays opened with a one-run first inning. Grant Silva and Kirk Rocha singled to start the inning. Silva later stole third base and scored when Kevin Seeger grounded out.

St. Edwards took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The score remained that way until Tabor added two runs in the top of the sixth.

Rocha and Keenan Chanin singled to start the inning, and Rocha later scored on a wild throw. Troy Torres later singled to bring Chanin home.

Tabor scored its final run in the seventh inning. Ryan Neufeld walked, and Shaun Reid hit a sacrifice bunt allowing Neufeld to advance to second. Rocha later singled to score Neufeld.

Rocha was a perfect 4-for-4 at-bat with one RBI.

Jacob Webb (1-0) won from the mound. In five innings, he allowed three hits and two runs, both earned, while walking three and striking out two. Alex Mann was credited with the save.

Tabor won, 4-3, in Game 2.

St. Edwards took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Tabor scored a run in the bottom of the second when Chanin singled and then stole second base. CJ DeDeaux singled to score Chanin.

St. Edwards added one run in the top of the third, but Tabor countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Seeger knocked out a double that scored Reid and Rocha.

The teams remained locked at three until Tabor added a run in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Torres was hit by a pitch allowing Silva to score.

Jean Acevedo (1-0) earned the win, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out four over seven innings pitched.

Coming?Tabor play at Morningside in two doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. both days.
