Soccer men fall to Mac in semifinals

The Tabor men?s soccer team lost a heartbreaker to McPherson College Saturday in the quarterfinals of the KCAC tournament.

After 90 minutes of play and two overtimes, the score remained a 1-1 tie. But the Bulldogs beat Tabor 5-3 in penalty kicks to cut short the Bluejay?s postseason play.

Rhe game was defensive battle, hampered even further by a strong southern wind. Neither team scored in the first half.

Finally the Bluejays? leading scorer, Marian Saar, found the back of the net at 65:00 to give Tabor a 1-0 lead.

It took until the 78-minute mark for McPherson to score.

After the two overtime periods, the game moved to a shoot?out. The Bulldogs got the save on Tabor?s first attempt and it was all they would need to secure the victory after converting all five of their attempts.

Bluejay goalkeeper Ben Clark had five saves in the match. Tabor was outshot 21-13 and 6-3 with shots on goal.

Saturday?s loss ends Tabor?s season with an 11-5-2 season record and a 5-3-1 conference record put them in fifth place.

The Bluejays? 11 wins marks their most successful season since 2002 and were the most by coach Grant Brubacher in his five years with Tabor.

The Bluejays will lose seniors Derek Mendenhall, Robert Masson and Dalton Burkhard to graduation, but will return 25 players for the 2012 season.
