Michael Klaassen, a junior on the Tabor College track and field team this spring, was to be recognized as the 2011-12 KCAC Champion of Character Male Student-Athlete of the Year during the sixth annual KCAC Sport Manage?ment Conference at Ottawa University Aug. 7.

Klaassen is majoring in graphic design and holds a 3.658 grade-point average. A three-year letter-winner and team co-captain in track and field, Klaassen earned first-team honors in the indoor weight throw and honorable mention in the shot put this past season.

The 2009 Hillsboro High School alum is also listed as an NAIA and KCAC scholar-athlete for 2011-12, which reflects his four semesters on the Dean?s High Honor Roll.

?Mike is a humble person who respects his competition and the sport of track and field,? said Bluejay head coach Dave Kroeker. ?He takes personal responsibility for his actions and the results of those actions.?

On campus, Klaassen is a freshman class peer adviser and three-year member of the Student Senate, currently serving as the junior class president.

Klaassen is an active member of the Lions Club, Faith Film & Culture House, as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Away from school and the throwing ring, Klaassen works with youth groups and district church camps.

?He is a strong leader, but also collaborates well as a team player,? said Joanne Loewen, assistant professor of education at Tabor. ?He works hard, has lots of energy, and a drive to accomplish the task at hand.?

The KCAC Champion of Character Student-Athlete of the Year Award was developed to recognize significant contributions from a student-athlete who excels in the classroom, athletics and community.

Committee members voted on the award based on the pool of nominees. Each KCAC institution is able to select one nominee to be considered for the award.
