Jays sweep Spires in KCAC opener

Tabor won Game 1, 19-8, and completed the four-game sweep with a 20-4 win in Game 2. The Tabor College baseball team swept a four-game series with Saint Mary Saturday and Sunday to open KCAC play, outscoring the Spires, 55-16.

Tabor won a 7-4, nine-inning game Saturday.

The teams were locked at 2-2 after the first inning, and Saint Mary took the lead with one run off a hit and an error in the top of the third. The Bluejays moved in front for good with three runs off four hits and an error in the fourth inning.

Saint Mary added a run in the sixth before Tabor scored its final two in the bottom half of the inning off the bat of Jerrik Sigg.

Manny DeLeon was 3-for-4 at-bat. Sigg was 2-for-3 and had three RBIs.

Thomas Longworth (3-2) went the distance, needing 95 pitches to earn the win. He scattered six hits and four runs (none earned) while walking no one and striking out three.

Tabor won Game 2, 9-0, in seven innings.

The Bluejays scored twice in the second, added four runs in the fourth and capped scoring in the fifth inning with Raulier Martinez?s three-run homer.

Martinez was 3-for-3 at-bat and had four RBIs.

Greg Turner (3-2) earned the shutout win. He gave up four hits in seven innings of work, while walking one batter and striking out six.

Tabor won Game 1 on a windy Sunday, 19-8, in nine innings. Tabor had 27 hits, including five home runs. Manny DeLeon hit three of them. Michael Baca and Colton Flax each had one.

Tabor led, 2-0, after DeLeon?s two-run homer in the first inning, and the Bluejays added two more off three hits in the third.

Saint Mary scored once in the fourth before Tabor plated four runs in the bottom half of the inning via the long ball. Baca drove in two runs with a homer, then DeLeon drove in two more with his second bomb.

After five innings, Tabor led, 9-1. Saint Mary roughed up starter Colton Moore by scoring seven runs off five hits in the top of the sixth, including a three-run home run. Tommy Sleva came in and gave up just one hit in 31?3 innings of relief while striking out four batters.

Tabor responded with four runs off five hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth, then plated six more in the eighth. Flax led off with a home run, then Baca worked a two-out walk. Couch hit a double, and DeLeon keyed the inning with a three-run homer. Two more runs scored off the bat of Raulier Martinez.

DeLeon was 4-for-5 at-bat and had seven RBIs.

Moore (1-0) earned the pitching win, giving up 10 hits and eight runs (one earned) in 52?3 innings of work. He walked one batter and struck out three.

Tabor won Game 2 in seven innings, 20-4.

Having scored four runs in the second inning, keyed by a two-run homer by Joel Frias, the Bluejays recorded a 12-run third inning.

Tabor roughed up Spire starter Grant Arnold for three singles, two doubles and a two-run home run by AJ Shaw to end his outing. Tabor knocked out four more hits after the pitching change, capped by a three-run home run by Colton Flax. When the dust settled, Tabor led, 16-1.

Tabor scored one run in the fourth on Haydon Mahe-Liessmann?s home run, and three more in the sixth on Flax?s homer before the Spires added three in the seventh.

Flax was 4-for-5 at-bat and had 11 RBIs.

Jahaziel Cantu (1-0) earned the pitching win. He scattered four hits and one run (earned) over five innings of work while walking one batter and striking out four.

Coming?Tabor (4-0, 12-6) was to host Bacone in a nine-inning game Tuesday at Wichita State, then will resume conference play with a four-game series at No. 9 Oklahoma Wesleyan Friday and Saturday.
