Bluejays win NAIA opener, 3-2

The No. 1 seeded Tabor College baseball team withheld a late rally by No. 5 Viterbo (Wis.) and won, 3-2, Monday in the NAIA Opening Round at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson.

Grant Silva opened the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored when Kevin Seeger hit a sacrifice fly, and the Bluejays took a 2-0 lead after Troy Torres singled and later scored on a Seeger single in the bottom of the third.

The score remained that way until Viterbo scored a run in the top of the eighth.

Tabor countered in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out after Silva grounded out, Gadiel Baez singled, Kirk Rocha doubled and Torres was hit by a pitch, Seeger reached base on the fielder?s choice and Baez scored.

In the final inning, Viterbo sandwiched a strikeout with two walks, then hit an RBI single that narrowed the gap to 3-2. With runners at first and second and one out, Tabor relief pitcher Alex Mann struck out the next batter, and the final Viterbo batter grounded out on a full count.

Shaun Reid was 2-for-3; Silva was 2-for-4; and Seeger was 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Junior Mustain was the winning pitcher. He scattered three hits over seven innings and gave up one run (earned). He walked three batters and struck out three. Mann was credited with the save. Over two innings, he gave up one hit and one run (earned) while walking two batters and striking out two.

Coming?Tabor was scheduled to face No. 3 Jamestown Tuesday.

The winner of that game will play in the championship game Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
