Bluejay women pick up home soccer victory

The Tabor men?s and women?s soccer teams split with St. Gregory?s University Friday after giving up the sweep to Avila University Wednesday.

The women improve to 5-3 on the season after Friday?s win, while the men drop to a 4-4 record overall.

Both teams will have a chance to improve their record as Tabor hosts MidAmerica Christian University Saturday, with game times at 2:30 p.m. for the men.

Men?Tabor suffered its first shut-out loss at home Friday, losing to St. Gregory?s University 1-0 at Joel H. Weins Stadium.

The Cavaliers scored under two minutes into the second half of the game off a kick from the corner.

Junior Antoine Williams started at the net for Tabor and registered six saves as the Bluejays were out-shot, 14-10 and 7-5 with shots-on-goal.

The Bluejays absorbed their first home loss against Avila University Wednesday, 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles broke the Bluejay defense to score at the 57th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

It seemed the one-point difference would stand for the remainder of the game, but Tabor tied it up with 10 minutes left to play off a corner kick from junior Aram Najar, with hit the foot by junior Rafael Marins to tie it up.

But Avila answered two minutes later to take the 2-1 lead, which they would hold the final eight minutes of play.

Williams started in the goal and had six saves. Tabor was out-shot by the Eagles, 20-9 and 9-4 with shots-on-goal.

Women?The Tabor women added yet another win to their record as they bested St. Gregory?s University Friday, dominating play from beginning to end on the way to a 4-1 win.

Sophomore Jessica Renzelman scored three goals to lead the Bluejay offense, but junior Molly Clark made the first goal of the match off a corner kick from Ashtyn Stephens, giving Tabor the 1-0 lead.

Junior Yolli Aashelm-Conner and freshman Katelyn Duba posted an assist each.

The Bluejays gave up one goal on a free kick from 30-yards out. Junior Amber Mayer started in the net and recorded two saves.

The win was a rebound off Tabor?s 3-1 loss to Avila University Wednesday, its first defeat of the season.

Tabor couldn?t overcome an Avila team that scored three times and limited the Bluejays to three shots in the first half.

The Bluejays would recover a bit as Stevens converted a penalty in the 80th minute to make it 3-1, Eagles. Tabor held Avila scoreless in the second half, but couldn?t find the offense to take back the win.

Junior Kalee Cross started for Tabor in the net and recorded eight saves. Tabor was out-shot, 22-7 and 14-2 with shots-on-goal in the match.
