Following a spring break trip to Texas, the Tabor tennis teams returned home victorious, with both the men and women winning Thursday?s home contests against Hesston.
Hesston?Tabor swept Hesston Thursday, with the women winning 8-1 victory and the men, 7-2.
?We have been playing tough competition, and the team is showing steady improvement,? coach John Ruder said. ?We have not been winning enough of our doubles matches, so we changed our teams, and as a result, both the men and the women swept the doubles matches.?
For the women, Becky Faber and Meredith Voran led the way in No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 victory over Samantha Aeschliman and Savannah Mitchell.
Anna Friesen and Karly Lindroth-Yates defeated Narumi Hayano and Emma Payne, 8-6, in No. 2 doubles.
The No. 3 pair of Katie Becker and Krista Schmidt completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Kacie Diener and Leah Unruh.
In singles, Faber defeated Aeschliman, 6-2, 6-4; Friesen won over Mitchell, 6-0, 6-2; Lindroth-Yates defeated Hayano, 6-2, 4-6, 16-14; Voran fell to Payne, 6-2, 3-6, 6-10; Becker defeated Unruh 6-1, 6-1; and Schmidt beat Vanessa Eubank, 6-2, 6-2.
The women improved to 2-4 for the season.
For the men, David Simmet and Sam Brucks defeated Luis Rairez and Hugo Chavez, 8-3, in No. 1 doubles.
Kelyn Vix and Tyler Dort won, 8-3, over Keenan Jensen and Taylor Ermosan in No. 2 doubles.
Jake Brucks and Darryn Davis completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory over Drew Hostetler and Dom Murray.
In singles, Simmet fell to Rairez, 6-3, 6-3; Vix gained a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jensen; and Dort defeated Ermosan, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Panttaja lost to Chavez, 6-0, 6-2 in No. 4 singles; Jake Brucks defeated Hostetler 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) and Sam Brucks won over Murray, 6-0, 6-1.
With the win, the Tabor men improved to 2-5 on the season.
LeTourneau?Tabor traveled to Texas to compete over spring break but did not get as much playing time as anticipated.
?We had two of our three matches rained out,? coach John Ruder said. ?However, it was a great team bonding time.?
The Bluejays only match was against LeTourneau University March 21. Both the Tabor men and women lost.
The men, who competed without their No. 1 and 2 players, lost 9-0. Tyler Dort and Nate Panttaja who filled the No. 1 doubles spot, lost 8-1 to Carlos Cantu and Laird Beaty.
Jake Brucks and Sam Brucks dropped an 8-4 match to Sindre Johnsgaard and Morgan Weaver in No. 2 doubles, while Darryn Davis and Jared Friesen lost 8-1 to Josh Bailey and Michael McLaughlin in the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Dort lost to Cantu, 6-2, 6-3; Panttaja was blanked to Beaty, 6-0, 6-0; Jake Brucks fell to Johnsgaard, 6-1, 6-0; Sam Brucks lost to Bailey, 6-4, 6-2; Davis fell to McLaughlin, 6-1, 6-2; and Friesen lost to Weaver, 6-0, 6-1.
The Bluejay women lost, 7-2.
In doubles, Becky Faber and Anna Friesen lost, 8-1, to Sarah Case and Shelby May in the No. 1 spot; Katie Becker and Meredith Voran lost, 8-5, to Kayla Bonina and Nell Spencer in No. 2 doubles; and Karly Lindroth-Yates and Krista Schmidt lost, 8-5, to Miranda Lamb and Brittany Cowen.
Tabor?s two wins came in No. 4 singles when Voran defeated Lamb, 6-1, 7-5; and No. 5 singles when Becker won over Cowen, 6-3, 6-0. In other action, Faber lost to Case, 6-0, 6-0; Friesen dropped to May, 6-3, 2-6, 8-10; Lindroth-Yates fell to Bonina, 6-2, 6-2; and Schmidt lost to Sanders, 6-2, 6-2.
Coming?Tabor was scheduled to host Baker University Tuesday and will compete at Friends Saturday at 9 a.m.
