The Canton-Galva High School Cheerleaders had a great year last year after becoming the 2020 1-2A KSHSAA Game Day Spirit Showcase Champions. And they are hoping to do it again this year when they return to the KSHSAA Spirit Competition with one newcomer, Freshman Emma Anderson and all of their returners —Seniors Gracie Kidd, Taygen O’Hara and Nicole Miller; Junior Brecken Pearson; Sophomores Brinley Becker and Emily Lance and Eagle Mascot, Soar: Senior Xavier Westbrook.
“Our team is looking forward to returning to the KSHSAA Spirit Competition in November for the 5th year in a row. These ladies have a strong team dynamic and are an amazing group to work with each week. I hope everyone gets to experience their talent and hard work in person this season,” said Coach Jennifer Becker, who has been assistant coach for four years and now serves as head coach.
While the team will face the same challenges of COVID-19 and the probability of changing protocols throughout the season, Becker is looking forward to spending the season watching the team grow.
“I hope they get every opportunity to do what they love each week,” said Becker.
The team attended cheer camp and had practices over the summer, and they put independent practice time in to also focus on their individual goals. They gathered back as a team at the beginning of August and they’ve been working hard since.
“My hope is that our team continues to improve their skills each week while strengthening their unique team bond. Each element involved in being a cheerleader takes time and dedication to do well, and they work hard to get it done. We showcase our versatility by cheering, dancing, stunting, and performing throughout the season. Ultimately, we would love to compete and place well in November at the KSHSAA Game Day Spirit Showcase Competition, but as their Coach, I feel like we’re winning each day these ladies show up and give their best,” said Becker.
