Area wide sports round-up 4/6/22

Hillsboro High School sent a powerlifting team to competition at Solomon on Saturday.

Goessel boys placed second in the Bennington Invitational on Friday.

Marion senior Mickelly Soyez broke the 2A squat state record last weekend at the state meet with a 245-pound lift. The previous record was 235 pounds.

Track: Canton-Galva’s high school track team started their season on Friday, April 1 at the Bennington Invitational.

“We can always strive to make improvements, but it was a strong start for the Eagle team,” said head coach Tina McMannis.

The Eagles came in 11th out of 12 teams for the girls, but they only have three athletes. Junior Mimi Craig was second in shot put (33-9.25) and sophomore Emily Lance was fifth in 100 m. hurdles (20.87). Sophomore Brinley Becker was just out of the points in the 200 with an eighth-place finish.

The boys team made a statement by placing second out of 11 teams with 81 points. Ell-Saline finished first with 154 points.

“Our seniors set a great example for the team, scoring points in all of their events. Tyson Struber was first in javelin, first in 200 m., and second in 100 m. Christian Darrah finished first in both the 1600 and 3200,” said McMannis.

Darrah and Struber joined junior Tanner Koehn and sophomore Lane McMannis to finish second in the 4 x 400 m. relay. Lane McMannis added points in his individual events, also: second in 300 m. hurdles, fourth in 110 m. hurdles, and sixth in javelin. Other scorers for the CG boys were senior Morgan Becker (second in 800 m.) and sophomore Wyatt Collins (fourth in discus).

Coming—Next week will be a busy one for the team. On Tuesday, April 5, they travel to Marion for a meet hosted by Solomon. Then on Friday, April 8, the team will split between Wakefield and the Shocker Pre-state Classic in Wichita.


Swim team: The Marion Swim Team did well at their meet on Tuesday, March 29 in Hutchinson. The team came in second out of five teams with 282 points. Derby High School won with 461 points.
