Hillsboro golfers compete at state

Hillsboro’s Rylie Daniels played a rainy course at state golf on Monday.

Hillsboro participated in the 2A State Golf Tournament held at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course on Monday, May 23. Day 2 on Tuesday was cancelled due to weather conditions. Hillsboro finished 9th out of 12 teams.

Garrett Helmer came in first out of the six players with 91 points. Eli Dalke finished with 94, Frank Wichert with 96, Lincoln Wichert with 102, Duncan Duell with 108 and Rylie Daniels with 118.

“This was a bittersweet experience. With having five seniors on the varsity team, I am thrilled that this group qualified to compete at the 2A State Golf Tournament. Three of them (Frank Wichert, Eli Dalke, and Riley Daniels) were on varsity their freshmen season when the team qualified in 2019, but they missed the opportunity to have a season in 2020 due to Covid. We did not have anyone qualify for state last season. With adding two seniors playing for the first time (Garrett Helmer and Duncan Duell) and the rapid improvement of freshman Lincoln Wichert, this group had a pretty solid year, earning top three team finishes in almost every tournament this year. Unfortunately as a group, they did not have their best day at state. However, I was thrilled that Helmer posted his personal best score of the season and earned the right to compete on day two. He was able to play two holes on Tuesday morning in the rain before play was suspended due to weather. It was eventually cancelled due to declining course conditions and all awards based off of results from day one,” said Coach Scott O’Hare.

“We will certainly miss this group of seniors, but I am excited about the number of young golfers we have on the team and looking forward to seeing how they progress in the future. It really was a fun season. Overall, this group worked hard, were very coachable, and continued to improve throughout the season. I am very proud of them.”
