April Young, a 2008-09 senior at Hillsboro High School, received a bronze medal in financial planning at Students Taking Action with Recognition events at the 2008 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America?s national leadership meeting in Orlando, Fla.

She received her medal at a FCCLA recognition ceremony held July 17 at the Orange County Conven?tion Center.

About 2,500 students advanced from the local, regional and state levels of STAR events to participate at the national level.

Young used her family and consumer science skills to develop a portfolio, make a formal presentation and answer questions from a panel of judges.

?I decided to research and create my project on purchasing a car,? Young said. ?It is a topic that most teens need to seriously know what they are doing. This project taught me a great deal about organizing and presenting information to others that can make a difference.?
