USD 410 – Hillsboro board reviews food service, meal prices

Meal prices and student fees were among the agenda items approved for the 2018-19 school year the USD 410 Board of the July 12 regular meeting.

The board approved a 5-cent increase for all meals except adult non-staff and extra milk.

“We will need to take a look at food service and what we do going forward,” Superintendent Max Heinrichs said following the vote.

Student fees will remain the same as the past year, with the addition of the monthly preschool tuition rates of $150 for half-day four days per week and $375 for full-day five days per week.

The board approved hourly pay rates for temporary employees such as substitute aides and bus drivers and the Walking School bus coordinator, which is new for 2018-19.

Heinrichs said changes included simplifying job titles and standardizing the hourly compensation for work performed.

The board also approved keeping the same pay rate as 2017-18 for substitute teacher at $90 for full day and $45 for half day.

Heinrichs reviewed summer maintenance work and projects, including painting at the high and elementary schools and construction of the lift in the high school.

He also informed that board that the leaky gas tank will be repaired on bus No. 9 and it will remain part of the transportation fleet.

In other business, the board:

◼ approved reappointing Mark Rook as board president and Rod Koons as vice president for 2018-19.

◼ approved appointing the following as board officers for 2018-19: Jared Jost as MCSEC representative, Joe Sechrist as MCSEC alternate representative, Mark Rooker as TEEN representative, Tim Kaufman as TEEN alternate representative, Rod Koons as chief negotiator, Rooker as assist ant negotiator, Kim Klein as Professional Development Council representative, Rooker as KASB Governmental Relations representative, and Jim Paulus as USD 410 Technology Committee representative.

◼ approved board policy revisions as presented.

◼ approved the resignation of Luke Moore as summer painter.

◼ approved classified staff hires of Tania Sorenson as custodian for HES and Carol Leppke as custodian for HMHS, both at $9 per hour, Allison Maxfield as summer painter at $9 per hour; and Doug Dick as route and mid-day bus driver at $9.72 per hour.

◼ approved supplemental contracts for Gaven Schmann, pending paper work, as HHS assistant football coach, and Bob Woelk and Michele Melton as forensic coaches.

◼ met in executive session for negotiations. No action was taken.

Board member Jim Paulus attended the meeting via phone.
