USD 410 board approves contracts for administrators

USD 410 Board of Education approved district administrator contracts for the 2018 fiscal year during its regular meeting Feb. 13.

Following the board meeting in executive session, contracts were extended for two years for principal Evan Yoder for Hillsboro Elementary School, principal Clint Corby for Hillsboro Middle High School and Lena Kleiner as executive director for TEEN.

Contracts were extended one year for business manager Jerry Hinerman, technology director Brad Just, and Robert Rempel, HMHS assistant principal and activities director.

Susie Kliewer gave her first presentation to the board since assuming her role seven months ago as coordinator and educator for Parents as Teacher.

PAT of Marion County is affiliated with the national organization and serves all five school districts in the county, Kliewer said, with the goal helping parents teach their children for their first 36 months.

Home visits by PAT educators, events that facilitate group connections among parents and help with resources are services provided by the organization.

“The long-term goal is school readiness for children,” Kliewer said.

Superintendent Max Heinrichs reported on the status of the collaborative preschool program arrangement with McPherson and USD 410.

“We’re learning a lot,” Heinrichs said about the relationship.

While USD 410 has a partnership with McPherson, he said, sometimes it feels like McPherson has ownership.

“We want to have a better partnership,” Heinrichs said, adding that he thinks the relationship will improve with better communication.

Heinrichs also introduced the proposed calendar for 2017-18, which the board will vote on next month.

“The calendar almost looks identical to last year,” he said.

Heinrichs also reviewed the projected rotation for 2014-2017 for district vehicles.

Other business

In other business, the board:

• approved a work agreement for Casey Moore for summer custodian and maintenance.

• approved supplemental contracts for Seth Shields as HMS assistant wrestling coach, Luke Moore as head baseball coach, and assistant baseball coach positions for Lyman Adams at 0.9 FTE and Jacob Fish at 0.1 FTE.

• heard a legislative update from Heinrichs about possible funding cuts by the state.

• heard a report from Heinrichs about anticipating a slight enrollment increase.

• heard about proposed summer maintenance projects, including remodeling the annex restroom, lighting and recabling in HES, and adding HMHS handicapped door openers.

The meeting was led by Rod Koons because board president Mark Rooker was absent. The board ended its meeting in executive session for personnel but no action was taken when the regular meeting resumed.
