Trojan to play in NBC tournament

For the second year, Austin Cross, a senior at Hillsboro High School this fall, has been playing with the Sluggers Academy 18U baseball team out of Wichita.

The team travels to Missouri, Oklahoma and various venues around Kansas to participate in showcase tournaments, playing at collegiate stadiums such as Wichita State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Kansas State.

Cross is one of four 2016 graduates on this year?s team, the majority of players are from the Derby, Goddard, Maize and Wichita area.

The team won the National Baseball Congress Hap Dumont National Showcase tournament, clinching a bid to the NBC World Series.

Cross started the championship game and had a 5-2 lead in the fifth when he was relieved?this was after pitching five innings in a 3-0 victory Friday to advance the team to the semifinals.

The Sluggers will start play at the NBC World Series sometime this weekend; the schedule has not been released but the tournament begins Friday at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita.
