Students rehearse the basic steps of a safe escape from fire

Each Hillsboro Elementary School student got a chance Friday to rehearse their safe-exit strategy as part of Fire Prevention Week. Hillsboro Fire Chief Ben Steketee (far right), with the help of Fire Pup, coached students on the proper response when a smoke alarm sounds in their home at night. First, roll out of bed and stay close to the floor. Then crawl to the door and feel it to see if it?s hot. If it?s cool, exit through the door after checking the hallway for smoke. If it?s hot, leave through window. Once out of the house, join family members at a designated ?safe meeting place.?
