Serene receives HCH scholarship

Hillsboro High School senior Mieka Serene was awarded a $500 scholarship from Hillsboro Community Hospital based on her interest in rural health care and other accomplishments, a hospital spokesperson said.

Following graduation, Serene said she plans to study nursing at Wichita State University.

For the last two years, she has worked at Salem Home, a nursing home in Hillsboro.

?When working this job, I realized I enjoy taking care of people and I love making people feel better,? she said. ?Working at the nursing home has shown me how easy it is to touch a life, whether it?s sitting with an elder and just giving them a few minutes of your time or helping them accomplish something they can no longer accomplish alone.?

Among her achievements, Serene is a four-year member of the HHS cheerleading squad and co-captain this year; Hillsboro FFA Chapter member, serving as treasurer this year and is a member of the First Mennonite Youth Group, participating in mission trips.
