The Hillsboro High School Scholars Bowl team competed well in a pair of tournaments last week.

On Saturday, the Trojan team of Cody Blackketter, Sam Book?less, Ben Gottsch and Bri Loewen placed fourth among 25 schools at Council Grove.

Hillsboro went 4-1 in opening pool play to advance to the championship pool. The Trojans lost to Flint Hills Christian 40-30 in the first match, but beat Blue?stem 90-0, Centre 50-30, Minnea?polis 60-10 and Marion in a tie-breaker, 50-40.

Hillsboro then went 4-3 in the championship pool, losing the first two matches to Manhattan 60-30 and Minneapolis 40-10, then beating Chase County 30-20 and Junction City 50-20 before losing to Lyndon 60-50. Hillsboro finished with a 70-60 win over Chapman and 60-30 over Rock Creek.

?All the students had good days and it seemed like each one of them came through with a key answer toward the end of our close matches,? coach Stuart Holmes said.

?To place fourth out of 25 teams is great, especially with large schools in the tournament such as Manhattan and Junction City.?

Earlier in the week, HHS competed at a 24-school tournament at Southeast of Saline.

The team of Blackketter, Bookless and Loewen was perfect in pool play, defeating Lincoln 30-20, Chapman 70-30, Solomon 50-0, Council Grove 60-45 and Quivera Heights 40-35.

In bracket play, Hillsboro lost to McPherson 50-10.

?Going undefeated in pool play was great,? Holmes said. ?We got a tough draw in the quarterfinals, having to take on (Class) 5A McPherson, but on another day with another set of questions, we could get a win against them as well.?
