Peabody-Burns preparing for first year of preschool classes

USD 398 will be offering preschool at Peabody-Burns Elementary School during the 2010-11 school year.

In order to attend preschool, the child must be at least 3 or 4 years old on Aug. 31, 2010, according to PBES Principal Ken Parry.

Morning and afternoon sessions will run Monday through Friday. The morning session will be from 8-11. The afternoon session will be from 12:30-3:30pm.

This preschool is available to all students residing in the district free of charge.

Students attending the morning session will have the opportunity to have breakfast in the cafeteria at 7:45. Students attending the afternoon session will have the opportunity to eat lunch in the cafeteria at noon.

Any students eating meals in the cafeteria will be charged the cost of the meal as found in the student handbook. Snacks will also be provided during each of the sessions free of charge.

?It is our intent that every 4-year-old who lives in our school district be given the opportunity to attend preschool at no cost to the family,? Parry said. ?Three-year-old students will also be allowed to attend as slots become available.?

He added that guidelines mandate that the district must make sure that all students who qualify are identified and accepted.

?It looks very hopeful at this point that all 4-year-olds and most, if not all, 3-year-olds in the district will be able to attend, but we will be able to make the final decision after our Aug. 4, 5 and 6 enrollment dates.?

Parry said preschool isn?t mandatory, but parents who enroll a child in the program should make every effort to ensure the child?s attendance daily.

?This is important so a ?slot? is not taken when it could have been used for another child,? he said.

?We are grateful for the opportunity to provide this additional educational experience to the younger members of our district,? he said.

Anyone needing more information about the program, or knows of a student who will be eligible for preschool, should call the school at 620-983-2188, Parry said.
