Fifth-grader Cade Harms, left, was the winner, and fourth-grader Caleb Hett the runner-up in the 2009-10 Marion Elementary School Geography Bee last Friday in the cafeteria. Twenty-four students participated in this year?s Geo Bee, according to Rod Garman, MES principal. Each of the 24 participants qualified for the bee by scoring the highest on a qualifying test that was given to all the students in grades four through six. ?This year?s Geo Bee was quite competitive,? Garman said. ?After several preliminary rounds, the field was narrowed to six finalists.? Those included Harms, Hett, Logan Waner, from fourth-grade; Joshua Knolla and Paige May from fifth-grade; and Sydnee Baldwin from sixth grade. Harms became the champion by correctly answering questions about such topics as the Congo River Basin, the Oregon Trail and the Sabine River.
