The Marion-Florence school board voted at its July 14 meeting to increase the price of breakfast and lunch for grades K-12.
?We want to spread this challenge of a reduced budget across all aspects of the district and not just any one heavily,? said Lee Leiker, USD 408 superintendent. ?This is part of that plan.?
Breakfast prices will increase by 10 cents and lunch prices by 20 cents. For grades kindergarten through sixth, breakfast will cost $1.35 and lunch will be $1.95. For grades seven through 12, the price will be $1.60 for breakfast and $2.20 for lunch.
?This comes out to a $35.20 increase for the year if a student ate lunch every day,? Leiker said.
The price of an extra carton of milk jumped from 30 cents to 35 cents. These changes will only affect those who are on the full-pay plan.
The board also voted to charge $35 per student for textbook fees in 2011-12.
?I really liked the fact we didn?t have enrollment fees in the past, and I personally would like to get back to that again,? Leiker said.
Each year, according to Leiker, the board reviews policies set by the Kansas Associa?tion of School Boards. ?Sexting? and head injuries were among the topics reviewed this year.
?When a student engages in conduct which constitutes a misdemeanor or a felony, we have to report that,? Leiker said. ?Sexting can fall under that, so schools have an obligation to report that crime if you know it?s going on in any fashion within the district.?
Another policy states an athlete who has a head injury during practice or competition cannot return until the student is evaluated by a doctor and the school receives a written confirmation from a doctor.
?It is no longer up to the judgment of a coach or parent,? Leiker said.
In other business, the board:
? re-elected Chris Sprowls as board president and Sarah Cope as vice-president.
? appointed Becky Summer?ville as board clerk, Deb Ship?man as substitute clerk and Martin Tice as treasurer.
? hired Danny Maddox as maintenance worker and groundskeeper and Jane King as part-time nurse.
? accepted the resignation of music instructor Adam John?son.
? approved an increase in mileage reimbursement rate from 50 cents to 51 cents.
? welcomed new board member Jeremiah Lange.
? approved the date of the budget hearing prior to coincide with month?s board meeting, starting at 7 p.m. Aug. 11.
