The Marion FFA chapter hosted the South Central District FFA Poultry career development event Wednesday, March 29, with about 150 students from 16 schools competing.
The event was officiated and coordinated by Scott Beyer from Kansas State University.
Participants were required to evaluate and place two classes of chickens, identify 10 retail cuts of chicken, use a candling light to examine the interior of eggs for defects, evaluate two classes of processed breaded poultry meat cuts for their retail suitability, evaluate a carcass class of 10 broiler carcasses, evaluate a class of eggs for exterior defects and grade them, take a written test and complete a team problem solving activity.
In the senior division, Marion’s team of Colton Mercer, Austin Neufeld, Riley Hake and Tyler Makovec placed sixth.
Other team members competing from Marion were Whitney Rudolph, Zane Slater, and Jacob Vondenkamp.
