Jenessa Hlad scholarship now funded

Tabor Student Body President Jeremy Davidson looks a little skeptical about the shave job he?s getting from fellow student Peyton Loewen as part of the ?Beards for Jenessa? fundraiser on Saturday night.A new endowed scholarship has been established at Tabor College in memory of Jenessa Hlad. The scholarship was formed through a joint effort by the Hlad family and Tabor students.

Hlad?s parents, Randy and Beth of Sylvan Grove, signed an agreement with Tabor to establish the scholarship in January.

During the spring semester students worked to add to the fund through a ?Beards for Jenessa? contest. Ten students volunteered to spend months growing beards.

The Student Senate sold tickets during lunch and at basketball games for a chance to shave one of the ten men. Winners of the contest were awarded at Saturday?s ?Spirit Night? basketball games against St. Mary by shaving the beards for a cheering crowd.

?We wanted to help raise funds for her scholarship because Jenessa was such a vibrant part of Tabor,? said Jeremy Davidson, student body president. ?This is an opportunity for us to support the Hlad family as well as contribute to the long legacy Jenessa will have at Tabor.?

Through student efforts and donations, the scholarship fund has surpassed the $10,000 threshold for endowment. The scholarship will be awarded to a student in Tabor?s athletic training program.

?The establishment of this scholarship has truly been a community effort,? said Ron Braun, vice president of advancement.

?We are so proud of the Tabor students for their hard work,? he added. ?The Hlad family is loved by our campus community, and this endowed scholarship will provide a fantastic legacy to share with future students.?

The Jenessa Hlad Memorial Scholarship will award its first recipient in the fall 2016. For more information about the scholarship or to add contributions to the fund, email
