HMS chess teams claims 2nd place

The Hillsboro Middle School chess team placed second out of 10 teams in the K-8 Division of the Hillsboro Chess Tournament Saturday. Pictured are team members (from left) Reece Berens, Matthew Denholm and Jordan Fryhover; Leighton Wagner, not pictured. Individually, Fryhover placed third, Denholm ninth and Reece Berens 11th among the top 20 out of 36 competitors. Meanwhile, the Hillsboro Elementary Team of Benjamin Koop, Jacob Denholm, Brodie Rathbone and Dakota Klein placed fourth out of 12 teams. Benjamin Koop placed third individually, earning a trophy. Fifty-eight students participated in the K-5 Division with 13 representing Hillsboro Elementary School. In the K-12 Division, senior Michael Christian placed 14th out of 35, earning a top-20 individual medal.
