Hillsboro teams fare well in area chess tournament

The Hillsboro Elementary School chess team won the K-5 Division at the tournament hosted Saturday by Canton-Galva. Pictured above are members of the winning team: front row (from left), Zachary Denholm, Tristan Rathbone, Kellan Huebner; back row, Abby Fryhover, Jacob Denholm, Alex Lubbers. Lubbers placed first individually and Denholm was second. The team is coached by Del Gray, Tabor College professor, and David Blair, director of the Karpov School of Chess. Meanwhile, the Hillsboro Middle School team placed second among five teams in the K-8 Division. Ben Koop placed third overall, leading the team of Brodie Rathbone, Jacob Funk, Jordan Fryhover, Matthew Denholm, Colin Settle and Dakota Klein. The HMS team is coached by Blair.
