Hillsboro seniors get together for belated prom

Some of the Hillsboro High School Class of 2020 attended a special prom just for them and their dates where they were very careful to follow social distancing protocol.

Due to COVID-19, the cancellation of Hillsboro High School’s junior-senior prom was a disappointment to many students who were looking forward to a night of memories. When the notification of the cancellation came through, senior Maddy Daniels decided to plan a make-shift prom for the senior class.

Daniels was assisted by fellow classmate Addie Berens in finding a suitable venue for the event. The prom was held in Tampa, Kansas at the senior center. Simple decorations of lights, streamers and a photo-op provided a “Footloose” style atmosphere, with pizza and pop for the meal.

Photos of the prom-goers were kindly taken by volunteer Karrie Rathbone at the Hillsboro Memorial Park on the evening of July 18. 11 seniors and 4 outside dates then traveled to Tampa and enjoyed a night of music, dancing and one of the last times the class would be together before graduating high school.

Thanks to Nathon and Tammy Daniels, Michelle and David Ediger, Karrie Rathbone, Dustin Dalke, Pati Funk, Sara Rempel, Treena Lucero, Kathy Isaac and Hillsboro Hardware. A fun night was had, prizes were donated, decorations were provided and photos holding memories were all achieved thanks to all who helped.
