Hillsboro schools select top spellers for county bee later this month

Hillsboro Elementary School and Hillsboro Middle School had their building spelling bees last Tuesday. The goal was to identify the top two spellers with the third-place finisher serving as an alternate to represent the schools at the Marion County Spelling Bee planned for Jan. 27 in Goessel. In the left photo are the elementary school winners: (from left) first place went to Karley Loewen, a fifth-grader; second place went to Ashley Peters, a fourth-grader, and the alternate will be Sam Sorensen, a fourth-grader. For Hillsboro Middle School (right photo, from left), Surinda Bell claimed first place by successfully spelling ?fulfilling? in the championship round; seventh-grader MaryElena Heyen was the runner-up and eighth-grader Megan Bechtold claimed third place and will be the alternate.
