Hillsboro FFA edges Centre at district dairy contest

The Hillsboro High School FFA chapter hosted?and won? the South Central District and ninth annual Earl Wineinger Invitational Dairy Cattle Evaluation Career Development Event Nov. 24, at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

Centre?s FFA chapter placed second. More than 200 students from 18 different chapters participated.

The winning HHS ?A? team, consisted of Andy Klassen, John Hein, Brandon Brown and Jacob Fish. Klassen was high individual and John Hein was fourth.

Members of the Centre ?A? team were Cole Svoboda, who placed second in the district and third in the invitational, Tanner Brunner, Brian Burhoop and Alex Hajek.

HHS ?B? Team members were Darren Mueller, Ethan Frantz and Landon Herbel. Mueller placed third individually.

In the Greenhand (freshman) division, the HHS team of Aaron Klassen, who placed eighth individually, Taylor Nikkel, Olivia Kliewer and Seth Bartel, placed fifth.

Centre?s Greenhand team of Trevor Hageberg (fifth in the district and ninth in the invitational), Dani Spohn (second in district, fourth in the invitational), Cassandra Dones, Kordell Harding and Shane Methvin placed sixth.

The animals for the classes were provided by Doyle Jost, Dale Klassen, Ronald and Donald Mueller and Kevin Winter.

Volunteers Bill Fish, Ricky Roberts and Stephanie Richmond gathered reasons from participants.

?Overall, the event ran smoothly and the FFA members had a great day,? said Sonya Roberts, chapter adviser. ?The Hillsboro FFA chapter would like to thank all the businesses who sponsored a plaque for the event.?

The South Central District Dairy Foods Career Develop?ment Event took place the same day and location. It was hosted by the Goessel FFA chapter.

During this activity, students were tested on their knowledge of dairy products by tasting milk for flavor and quality, identifying cheeses, distinguishing natural and artificial dairy products and several other components of dairy production.

Members participating from the Hillsboro FFA included Neal Kaiser, John Hein, Brandon Brown, Jacob Fish, Landon Herbel, Darren Mueller, Aaron Klassen, Olivia Kliewer, Taylor Nikkel and Seth Bartel.

Aaron Klassen placed 10th overall in the Greenhand Division.

Centre?s senior ?A? team placed third in the event. Team members were Brian Burhoop, who finished ninth individually, Cole Svoboda, Allison Shields and Adam Matz.

In the Greenhand (freshman) division, Centre finished second. Team members were Shane Methvin (fourth individually), Cassandra Dones (seventh), Kordell Harding, Trevor Hageberg and Dani Spohn.

Centre students who competed were Nathan Barney, Jared Diepenbrock, Alex Hajek, Josh Leach, Zach Antosyk, Derek Calvert, Heath Hill, Seth Stroda, Tanner Brunner, Amanda Floyd, Ripley Howard, Casey Kristek, Nikki Potocnik, Katie Remy, Tori Marler, Ben Seeman and Benjamin Wirtz.
