Hillsboro competes at home chess tourney

Owen Dalke, a third-grader at Hillsboro Elementary School, studies the board for inspiration.The Hillsboro Chess Guild hosted 116 students from more than 16 schools Saturday at its annual home tournament.

?We had another competitive, but successful tournament,? said Leah Rose, guild sponsor. ?While Hillsboro?s high school team struggled in a tough division, our middle school team and both elementary teams received team trophies.?

Following are the Hills?boro results for each age division.

Hillsboro freshman Kayla Gunn focuses on her move during Saturday?s home tournament.? K-12. Medal winner: Matthew Denholm, 13th. Also competing: Kayla Gunn and Franklin Jost.

? K-8. Team: third place. Medal winners: Jacob Den?holm, first; Abby Fryhover, 14th. Also competing: Jason Latham and Duncan Duell.

? K-5. Team: third place. Medal winners: Zachary Denholm, 20th. Also competing: Sam Sorensen, Wenxi Funk, Angus Duell, Bryant Dalke, Zander Haslett and Barron Talbott.

? K-3. Team: second place. Medal winners: Derek Suderman, ninth; Owen Dalke, 12th; Zayne Haslett, 13th, and Noah Klanderud, 14th.

Qualified team members will compete in the state tournament this Saturday, in Lawrence.
