HHS seniors earn academic recognition

Numerous awards and scholarships involving the Hillsboro High School Class of 2009 were announced during commencement Sunday.

Four students were named class valedictorians with a 4.0 grade-point average; Kelsey Bartel, Cody Blackketter, Ben Gottsch and Cassie Kroeker. Clay Shewey was named salutatorian.

Co-winners of the John A. and Harriet Kizler Wiebe Good Citizen Scholarship were David Loewen and Michael Klaassen. Each student will receive a scholarship of $2,000 to assist them with their college education.

The scholarship was established with an initial endowment of $200,000 in 1991 by HHS alums John and Harriet Wiebe to honor the faculty and graduating seniors in the class of 1941.

In addition to the two winners, the field of nine finalists included Ben Gottsch, Abi Humber, Daniel Jost, Cassie Kroeker, Heidi Schroeder and Jet Skiles.

n Kansas State Scholars (meet Board of Regents curriculum requirements, a composite GPA of 3.9 and an average ACT score of 29): Kelsey Bartel, Cody Blackketter, Candace Ediger, Ben Gottsch, Cassie Kroeker, Isaac Leihy, David Loewen, Brandon McMillen, Nicholas Mueller, Heidi Schroeder, Clay Shewey, April Young.

n Paul Rundstrom Memorial Scholarship ($500, senior member of the golf team): Jacob Kenney.
