HHS Scholars Bowl team goes 1-4 in state pool play

Hillsboro High School?s Scholars Bowl experience at the Class 3A state tournament Saturday ended in pool play.

The Trojan team of Cody Blackketter, Ben Gottsch, Brianna Loewen and David Winter went 1-4 in its six-team pool. Only the top two teams from each of the two preliminary pools advanced to the championship pool.

Hillsboro opened with a 60-30 loss to Douglass, then defeated Lakin 40-35. The team then dropped matches to Kansas City Christian 70-20, Rock Creek 40-30 and Norton 70-30.

Wichita Collegiate won the state title with Lakin finishing as the runner-up. Council Grove was third and KC Christian fourth.

?The team was competitive but didn?t get enough wins to advance into the championship pool,? said Stuart Holmes, HHS coach. ?The team still had an outstanding season, winning meets at Moundridge and Goessel as well as winning first at the MCAA league meet and qualifying for state.?

Blackketter, Gottsch and Winter are seniors this year.

?They have been a big part of the team?s success,? Holmes said.
