HHS Scholars Bowl squad goes 4-2 at Hesston

The Hillsboro High School Scholars Bowl team made it to the quarterfinals of the 24-school meet Nov. 27 at Hesston.

In pool play, Hillsboro went 4-1, defeating Cheney 50-20, Maize 60-30, Southeast of Saline 90-40 and Nickerson 70-50 before losing to Andover 45-40.

The second-place finish in its pool put Hillsboro in the quarterfinals against Wichita East, the defending Class 6A champions. East prevailed 80-10.

Competing for Hillsboro were Cody Blackketter, Matthew Brown, Ben Bosworth, Corissa Bartel, David Winter and Ben Heyen.

?The team did an excellent job and was extremely competitive,? said coach Stuart Holmes. ?With a different quarterfinal draw, we could have been in the final four. That?s the way things worked out, but still the kids did a great job and were certainly one of the stronger teams at the meet.?

Moundridge?Hillsboro entered two teams at the 16-team Scholars Bowl meet in Moundridge Nov. 8.

Team 1, comprised of Ben Bosworth, Sam Bookless, Justin King and Mark Prieb, won three matches and lost two in pool play.

HHS defeated Canton-Galva 40-20, lost to Halstead 20-70, defeated Lyons 30-20, defeated Nickerson 40-20 and lost to Goessel 10-30.

Team 2, comprised of Cody Blackketter, Ben Gottsch, David Loewen and Logan Schneider, won four matches and lost one in pool play.

HHS defeated Sterling, 60-50, Burrton 40-30, Little River 80-10 and Peabody 60-30 before losing to Remington 10-50.

Team 2 qualified for bracket play, losing to Marion 20-30 in the semifinals, then coming back to take third place with a 50-40 win over Inman.

?The teams had a good day and competed well,? coach Stuart Holmes said.
