The Hillsboro High School Scholars Bowl team opened its competitive season by placing first in a 17-school meet in Moundridge Nov. 13.

Competing at the meet for HHS were David Winter, Cody Blackketter and Sam Bookless.

In pool play, the HHS team defeated Sterling 55-30, lost to Pretty Prairie 30-60, then defeated Ell-Saline 55-40, Lyons 55-40 and Hutchinson Trinity 80-20.

The team?s 4-1 record qualified it for bracket play, based on the margin-of-victory points among the three teams that sported the same won-loss record.

In bracket play, HHS defeated Sterling 60-16 in the first round, Marion 60-15 in the semifinals, and Southeast of Saline 70-60 in the finals. Blackketter secured the title for Hillsboro when he answered a math question correctly to win on the second extra question.

?The team had an excellent day with all three guys contributing throughout the competition,? said coach Stuart Holmes.

?Fortunately for the team, we were able to win some very close matches today,? he added. ?David and Cody seemed to catch fire in bracket play as David had five of the six correct answers in the semifinals and Cody had six of seven in the finals.?
