Under the watchful eyes of Hillsboro Elementary school fifth-graders, Hillsboro Tree Board co-chair Sharon Boese scoops some soil around a freshly planted redbud tree in front of the school on Friday.

Planting the tree was a highlight of the program, which also included a history of Arbor Day led by board member Karen Wiebe and the announcement of the Arbor Day poster contest winners by co-chair Paul Jantzen (pictured in the photo holding one of the winning entries.) Marah Franz won first place and Erika Bichet, Allison Maxfield, Allison Gray and Abi Hurst were runners up. All of the posters are on display in the local library and in downtown businesses.
