Guitarist to perform at Tabor

Charles David Smart will perform his free concert at Tabor at 7 p.m. Sept. 4.Acoustic guitarist Charles David Smart will be performing a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the chapel located inside the H.W. Lohrenz building on the Tabor College campus.

Smart will also be teaching a master class for all Tabor music majors at 3 p.m. that same day.

?It?s going to be fun,? Smart said. ?It will be good to be back in Hillsboro again. I haven?t been there for a couple of years.?

Smart has performed in a variety of settings during his career, ranging from stately cathedrals, mega-churches and country chapels.

He?s also played backstage at Nashville?s Grand Ole Opry, the family pubs of Ireland and American university concert halls.

The multi-styled, award winning, Nashville recording guitarist attended a musical public school that encouraged significant performing opportunities. His high school vice principal booked his first road gig.

A few years later, Smart caught the attention of other touring musicians, which led to his first extended professional booking at the Tulsa Hilton Hotel Copa Club with Los Angeles-based singer Karen Blackwood.

As a 19-year-old youth from a small town in Kansas, Smart was surrounded by extraordinary musicians from New York, Boston and Las Vegas.

Immediately from there, he went on tour with internationally recognized musicians, including Phillips, Craig and Dean, First Call, New?Song, Larnel Harris, Roy Clark and jazz legends Pat Methany and Clark Terry.

Since 1994, Smart has taught leading guitarists worldwide through MidAmerica Nazarene University.
