Goessel students compete at area music festivals

The Goessel High School music students participated in several festivals this spring, according to Renae Schmidt Peters, vocal music teacher.

The high school band, choir, men?s glee and women?s glee performed April 13 at the KSHSAA State Music Festival for large ensembles at Marion.

?All four ensembles earned Division I ratings,? Peters said, ?with many students also performing at KSHSAA solos and small ensembles festivals.?

Performing solos April 2 at the regional festival at Tabor College were Kara Schmucker, vocal; Mark Schmidt, flute; Shane Goerzen, vocal; Alex Hiebert, vocal; Gracie Sullivan, flute; Stephan Goertzen, vocal; Samantha Jarvis, vocal; Jana Stifel, oboe; Shianne Defreese, vocal and tuba; Kendra Flaming, vocal.

Musicians with I ratings performed at state festival April 30 at Stuckey Middle School in Wichita were Reece Hiebert, vocal and bass clarinet; Bruce Benjamin, trombone; Georgia Thiesen, vocal; Peter Voth, vocal; Neal Brubaker, vocal and trombone; and Michelle Unruh, vocal.

Students earning I ratings at both regional and state music festivals were Ben Wiens, saxophone; Grant Flaming, trumpet; Georgia Thiesen, flute; Aimee Flaming, vocal; Alex Schmidt, vocal; Braden Unruh, vocal and trumpet; Michelle Unruh, clarinet; saxophone ensemble; Elbiata Singers; Elbiata Women?s Ensemble and Elbiata Men?s Ensemble.

In addition to Peters as vocal music teacher, Robert Tierney was the instrumental instructor.
