The board also approved Ann Hiebert as the summer school teacher and Suzanne Meier as the assistant. Summer school is offered four mornings a week for three weeks. Superintendent/elementary principal Dr. John Fast said that 20 kindergarten through fourth-grade students are enrolled for summer school.

Turning their attention to another matter, the board discussed school board goals, identifying six areas of focus: curriculum and learning, school partnerships, facilities and technology, long-term staffing, community relations, and social/emotional needs.

In other business, the board:

* heard from junior high/high school principal Scott Boden that one student from Goessel participated in state golf, which was a week and a half late because of weather. He said that two high school students had participated in state track.

* heard that drivers education and sports camps had been held in June.

* noted that enrollment is scheduled for August 7 and 8, the first day of sports practice is August 19, and the first day of school will be August 22. Enrollment is expected to remain steady, although the senior class from the 2018-2019 school year was larger than the sixth-grade class coming into junior high for the 2019-2020 school year. Therefore, Boden expects enrollment to be slightly lower for the junior high/high school building.

* heard the Marion County Special Education Cooperative report from board member Bryant Miller. He talked about roof repairs at the MCSEC building. Wray Roofing is doing the work and is assisting with the portion of the deductible not covered by insurance. It was also noted that Wray Roofing was very instrumental in assisting the Goessel school system when there was roofing damage. The board expressed appreciation for the work.

* noted that Funk Electric is replacing the old lighting in several grade school classrooms. Fast said that is a great improvement. He said Lyndl Duerksen is installing two drop ceilings. Three doors will be replaced, and some painting is being done.

* heard about a gardening shed for garden supplies at the elementary school. Fast said the $1,000 grant that Pam Abrahams received for the garden will be used for the shed.

* heard that summer cleaning, painting, and refinishing projects are underway at the junior high/high school building. Some classrooms are getting new carpet.

* heard about updates to the fire alarm system.

* talked about replacing an old bus. Fast said that Jets Diesel will be doing summer maintenance and pre-inspection on the school buses.

* heard from Fast that the annual TLC (The Learning Consortium) meeting is scheduled for August 5.

* approved the financial statements of $200,246.94. Fast said that volleyball uniforms and bus repairs are included. He noted that June is often a month of lots of bills.

* changed the next meeting to Monday, July 1, at 6:30 in the morning.
